Chocolate Chip Cookie History
The Chocolate Chip Cookie was invented in 1924 by Ruth Graves Wakefield, who found herself in the kitchen one day making one of her favorite recipes called the “Butter Drop Do Cookie”. The Butter Drop Do Cookie recipe called for the use of baker’s chocolate. At that time Ruth did not have any baker’s chocolate in her home so she substituted a semi-sweet chocolate bar and cut it up into pieces to add to her cookies. However, unlike baker’s chocolate, the cut up pieces of chocolate bar did not melt completely, but only softened.
As it so happened, the chocolate bar had been a gift from the Andrew Nestlé of the Nestlé Chocolate Company. As the Toll House Chocolate Chip cookie recipe invented by Ruth became popular and sales of the Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar increased; Andrew Nestlé and Ruth Graves Wakefield struck a deal. Andrew Nestlé would print the Toll House Cookie recipe on its packaging and Ruth Graves Wakefield would have a lifetime supply of Nestlé® chocolate.
Although there are many manufactures of chocolate chips today, the recipe of Ruth Graves Wakefield is still honored on the back of each Nestlé® package.
